Today is World Refugee Day, a moment that reminds us that asylum rules are not abstract but directly shape people’s safety and futures. As the EU’s Pact on Migration and Asylum entered into force on 12 June, researcher Rachele Scardamaglia explores one key element of the new system: the concept of a “Safe Country of Origin”. This approach is designed to speed up asylum procedures by assuming that people from certain 'safe' countries generally do not need international protection. But, Utrecht University research points to a more complex reality. Safety is not experienced equally, and for some people, especially women, serious risks can still be part of everyday life.   When safety is defined at country level, individual circumstances can be overlooked.
