As AI data centres consume land, water and power, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called on major AI companies to publicly disclose the full environmental impact of its systems. “No more hidden costs. No more shifting the burden onto those least able to bear it,” he said, adding: “It is time to come clean.” Noting that data centres are already consume more electricity than most nations, the Secretary-General said communities should no longer be left in the dark about the environmental impact of the infrastructure rising around them.
