A common infection affecting refugee communities in regional Australia is hiding in plain sight – and UNE researchers are working to bring it into focus. UNE Medicine graduate Dr Madeleine de Carle is part of a team investigating Helicobacter pylori and its impact on patients in rural NSW. She’s working alongside UNE academic Dr Salma Ali and UNE Head of School of Rural Medicine, Professor Michelle Guppy. Their findings show both high rates of infection and worrying levels of treatment resistance, and raise important questions about screening and treatment in Australia.
