“It’s not my heritage, and I believe the people whose heritage it is should be making decisions about what happens to it.” For Associate Professor Jillian Huntley, archaeology is not just about analysing the past - it’s about reshaping how research is done, by centring the voices and authority of Indigenous communities. “All over Australia and our broader region, we have something very special and its preservation is hugely important. We are still grappling with how to do that in the true spirit of reconciliation with First Peoples," she says. Through conservation and research, Jillian works with Indigenous communities to challenge long-standing power imbalances and protect cultural heritage for future generations. Jillian is a 2025 UNE Rising Star Alumni Award winner, in recognition of her pioneering contributions to rock art conservation and ochre provenance research while fostering these inclusive partnerships. ⭐ Her full story: https://lnkd.in/gvxHBHnh ⭐ How to nominate someone for the 2026 UNE Alumni Awards: https://lnkd.in/gPb8EZS2 #ProudToBeUNE #UNEAlumni
