UNE researchers are helping shape what is believed to be a world-first system measuring suicide prevention efforts across Australia. Launched today by the Australian Government, it could transform how Australia measures what’s working - and what’s not - in preventing suicide. Developed by the National Suicide Prevention Office and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), the new Outcomes Map will combine data and lived experience to build a clearer picture of where progress is being made, where gaps remain, and where support is needed most. Professor Myfanwy Maple, Director of the UNE-led Manna Institute, helped shape the qualitative framework behind the Outcomes Map. "As far as we know, it’s the first time in the world anyone has tried to do this," she says. "Over time, this ... will provide a better understanding of the diversity of experiences of distress and suicide, where we are seeing reductions in suicide distress - and why." Prof Maple says that, ultimately, "over the life of the strategy, this will provide evidence for the most effective and coordinated support for individuals and their communities."
