The forests within UNESCO-designated sites capture around 15% of all carbon absorbed by forests globally. Spread across #WorldHeritage sites, #BiosphereReserves and #UNESCOGeoparks, these forests play a critical role in regulating the climate, storing carbon and protecting biodiversity. UNESCO’s new report estimates that these sites store around 240 gigatons of carbon, equivalent to nearly two decades of current global emissions if released.
