Learning is one of the few investments that lasts a lifetime. It helps people adapt to change, participate fully in society and build more resilient futures for themselves and their communities. Yet access to learning opportunities beyond formal education remains out of reach for many. For decades, the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) has worked with countries around the world to advance lifelong learning, strengthen literacy and support policies that help people continue learning throughout their lives. From local communities to national education systems, the impact of lifelong learning extends far beyond the classroom, creating opportunities, fostering inclusion and empowering people of all ages. For more than 70 years, Germany and the city of Hamburg have hosted and supported UIL, helping make this global impact possible.
