UNESCO hosted the 2026 L’Oréal–UNESCO For Women in Science International Awards Ceremony at its Paris Headquarters, marking 28 years of advancing women in science. This year’s five laureates, selected from a record 504 nominations across 89 countries, are pioneering research that addresses some of today’s most urgent global challenges — from tissue engineering and genomic science to agricultural innovation, psychiatry and the impact of nutrition on mental health. Representing five regions of the world, the laureates are transforming how we understand and respond to global health and environmental challenges. Since its creation, the programme has now recognized more than 5,000 women researchers, including 142 international laureates, and continues to highlight the critical importance of gender equality in science. Together with the Fondation L'Oréal, UNESCO is strengthening a long-standing partnership to support women in science across generations — from inspiring girls to pursue scientific careers to recognizing the world’s leading researchers.
