Protecting our planet starts with education. Currently, nearly 112,000 schools in 98 countries have become green schools. These schools follow UNESCO’s Green School quality standard, a framework that defines the minimum requirements for creating learning environments across four dimensions: governance, facilities and operations, teaching, and community engagement. They are transforming how learning happens, promoting sustainability not as a subject, but as a way of thinking, living and acting. In Brazil, at the Ágora School in Cotia near São Paulo, learning extends beyond the classroom. Surrounded by forest, students engage directly with nature through observation and hands-on experience. Sustainability is not only taught, it is part of daily life. Students are encouraged to explore, question and take responsibility for their environment. This reflects a broader global shift. By 2030, UNESCO aims for at least half of all schools worldwide to become green schools.
