What does it take to build the cities of tomorrow? This 24th of June, 23 city officials and governance practitioners from across South and Southeast Asia gathered to work through exactly that, kicking off the two-day Future-Ready Urban Governance Training Programme. Different contexts, one shared conviction: that the future of urban governance is something to be shaped, not simply weathered. They came from cities Bangkok (Thailand), Bintulu (Malaysia), Colombo and Gampola (Sri Lanka), Dhangadhi and Kathmandu (Nepal), Hue (Viet Nam), Iloilo (Philippines), Kulhudhuffushi City (Maldives), Palu City (Indonesia), Tiruchirappalli and Dehradun (India), and the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives of Bangladesh. Over the past three months, participants brought future-ready thinking back to their own administrations, tackling real urban challenges on the ground. Today they returned to share what they learned, and to learn from one another. The programme is a collaboration between UNDP, the Chandler Academy of Governance, and CityNet, and forms part of our regional strategy, Transforming Urban Futures in Asia-Pacific. Because the strongest cities are not the ones that plan for the future. They are the ones building the capabilities, partnerships, and institutions to actively create it.
