Protecting marine ecosystems supports economic activities such as tourism, which depend on healthy coasts and seas. Yet as of June 2026, only 9% of marine areas and 17% of territorial waters are protected – below the global target to conserve and effectively manage 30% of ocean areas by 2030. Sustainable ocean services offer a practical development pathway. When well managed, they can generate foreign exchange, support local businesses, create jobs and strengthen incentives to conserve the ecosystems that enable ocean-based growth.
