From marine data and technology to ecosystem monitoring, ocean-based innovation is booming. Up 9% in 2025, marine research and development – despite accounting for a small share of global ocean services trade – was the sector's fastest-growing segment. "The ocean is Earth's least explored frontier, yet it may hold answers to this century's defining challenges," Executive Director Ashok Adicéam of Mission Neptune – a France-based public-private research programme focused on ocean science, economy and governance – told UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in a recent interview.
