Scientists at NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration have confirmed: El Niño is here and is expected to strengthen. The climate crisis and El Niño create a dangerous double jeopardy. This comes at a time when we see climate impacts like heatwaves, droughts and floods hitting countries and economies in real time, affecting lives and livelihoods of people around the world. El Niño can amplify these spiraling climate impacts, because a warmer ocean and atmosphere increases the availability of energy and moisture for extreme weather events such as heatwaves and heavy rainfall. We know what we need to protect people and planet: bolder, faster climate actions to cut planet-heating pollution and boost the resilience of communities and economies.
