What do food processing plants, gyms, and hospitals have in common? They're all places where it's essential to quickly and reliably monitor the cleanliness of surfaces in order to detect and address bacterial contamination. Now, University of Massachusetts Amherst food scientists have invented a new smartphone-based technology, known as BactiSee, to help meet the need for controlling the transmission of bacterial risks. Described by its inventors as something "like a COVID test crossed with a smartphone," BactiSee provides a direct and reliable measurement of bacterial contamination, with results available in about five minutes.
