UCD Awareness Month is a reminder of what's at stake for individuals living with ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency, the most common urea cycle disorder. Caused by a genetic defect in a liver enzyme responsible for processing ammonia, OTC deficiency puts individuals at risk for unpredictable, potentially life-threatening hyperammonemic crises that can lead to hospitalization, cognitive impairment, and death. Even with current management, the risk of a serious crisis remains.
