300+ people came to Munich for one prize: a fully covered trip to Hong Kong. 36 hours later, my team and I won the EuroTech Federation x Hong Kong Talent Engage Hackathon 🏆 As you'd expect, we were in the HealthTech track. The problem we picked was Hong Kong's own: an aging population and high thalassemia prevalence, with anemia getting caught too late because checking hemoglobin means a blood draw. So we built Pearl. You take a photo of the inside of your lower eyelid and it estimates your hemoglobin, no needle. We found a dataset linking conjunctiva photos to real blood values, built the tool around it, and added a calibration step to keep a bad photo from throwing off the reading. We tested it on-site against a real hemoglobin device, the numbers held up, and then we pitched it and won. Next stop: Hong Kong 🛫 Built with Cem Araz, Batıkan Bora Ormancı and Muhammad Moiz. Thanks to the jury, Felix Chan , Tanmay Gupta, PhD and Wendy Yau, and to the EuroTech Federation team, Laurenz Sommerlad and Hong Kong Talent Engage for making it happen.
