Childhood trauma can change a child's biology, but new UCSF research shows that this damage can be undone. UCSF psychologist Nicki Bush, PhD, is the first to demonstrate that talk therapy can calm the overactive aging process that severe stress triggers in developing bodies. Her work builds on the child parent psychotherapy model pioneered by Alicia Lieberman, PhD, director of UCSF's Child Trauma Research Program, which restores trust and builds connection between caregiver and child after adversity. As that connection grew, researchers measured changes in children's epigenetics, which influence how the body carries out genetic instructions.
