After 11 years as Dean of the UCSF School of Medicine and nearly three decades at the university, Talmadge King Jr., MD, is stepping down. His tenure wasn’t defined by dominating the room, but by understanding it. His leadership style is rooted in deep listening, “leading from the middle,” and building trust every step of the way. From his roots in rural Georgia to the halls of Harvard to leading one of the nation’s top medical schools, Dean King’s journey is as remarkable as the legacy he leaves behind. As he prepares for his next chapter, we’re honoring his impact as a teacher, mentor, and leader. Following a sabbatical, he plans to return to the faculty to continue teaching and mentoring.
