"My Mexican-American heritage, fifteen years of dance, and an arthritis diagnosis as a teenager have shaped who I am today. While these experiences may seem vastly different from one another, they all taught me perseverance, adaptability, and the importance of community. One of the biggest challenges I have faced was being diagnosed with juvenile ankylosing spondylitis after years of severe pain and later fibromyalgia during college. Managing chronic illness while pursuing my academic and professional goals required resilience and discipline. Rather than allowing my condition to define me, I focused on opportunities that aligned with my passions and gave me purpose. At UC San Diego, I explored my interests in law, government, and public service through Residential Life, The UCSD Guardian, pre-law organizations, internships, and community involvement. These experiences strengthened my commitment to pursuing a legal career and creating meaningful change through public service. One of my proudest accomplishments was applying to law school during my second year at UC San Diego. Although it was an unconventional choice, this process allowed me to reflect on my journey, the people who supported me, and the values that continue to guide me. I am excited to continue that journey at Georgetown Law as I pursue my Juris Doctor and explore interests in health and administrative law. The most valuable lesson I have learned is to step outside of my comfort zone. Taking initiative led to unexpected opportunities, lifelong friendships, and a community that has shaped my future. Keep an open mind because you never know where one opportunity might lead." – Julia Cervantez (she/her), International Studies–Political Science Major, Class of 2026 #TritonStories #UCSD2026
