Have you ever wondered what it takes to spin out a successful biotech company? 🧬 Dr Martin Pule, founder of Autolus Therapeutics, shared his experience with Dr Richard Fagan at last month's I-O Converse. The candid conversation saw him discuss the process of commercialisation to get obe-cel - a life-saving leukaemia therapeutic based on UCL research - to market, the differences of the two worlds, and navigating NICE and NHS approvals. "Academia is very good at generating bold ideas, while industry is essential for developing them at scale," he said. Dr Pule had some advice for others considering taking their research beyond the university: - Think about patents early - Think carefully about your idea but don't sit on it indefinitely - you're unlikely to be the only one heading in that direction - Do not underestimate the scale of the transition from academia to industry.
