Today, UCL is in Japan, continuing to strengthen our long-standing partnership with The University of Osaka. Discussions brought together senior leadership, including Prof Geraint Rees and Prof Mikako Hayashi, alongside colleagues such as Prof Lasana Harris and Prof Neil Curson. Conversations centred on two key priority areas: advancing collaboration in healthy ageing and dementia, and expanding emerging links in quantum science. A particular highlight was the planning meeting for the next Healthy Ageing and Dementia Symposium, where both institutions made significant progress in shaping the event, scheduled to take place this autumn in Osaka. We will also hold a kick-off workshop at UCL in mid-July to refine research areas and topics. There is strong shared excitement about encouraging greater involvement of early-career researchers and strengthening industry collaboration—watch this space. These conversations mark an important step forward in shaping a more coordinated, long-term collaboration between UCL and Osaka—building on existing strengths while creating new opportunities for joint research and global impact. Alongside the academic discussions, the visit also connects UCL with wider partners and communities, with Prof Geraint Rees attending a VIP reception at the British Ambassador’s residence, where he met the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, and engagement with our UCL Alumni Relations network continues in Kyoto. #UCLandJapan #UCL200 Thomas S Miller, Robert Thompson, Will Lovegrove, UCL Innovation and Enterprise, UCL Faculty of Brain Sciences, UCL Engineering, UCL Faculty of Medical Sciences, London Centre for Nanotechnology
