π Congratulations to Professor David Silver, whose new AI company, Ineffable Intelligence, has secured $1.1 billion in seed funding, one of the largest seed rounds in Europe. David, a Professor in our department and a leading figure in modern AI, spent more than a decade at Google DeepMind, where he led pioneering work in reinforcement learning. β His contributions include leading the development of AlphaGo, the first AI system to defeat a world champion in the game of Go, as well as AlphaZero and AlphaStar, which demonstrated the power of self-learning approaches. This new venture builds directly on that trajectory. Ineffable Intelligence is focused on developing advanced AI systems that can learn from experience rather than data, extending the principles that underpinned his earlier breakthroughs. Professor Daniel Alexander, Head of UCL Computer Science, said: βThis milestone highlights the necessity of fundamental research and the role universities like UCL have to play in early ideas leading to world-changing technologies. It also reflects the strength of UCLβs research community, producing ideas, talent and leadership at the forefront of one of the most important technological transformations of our time.β Photo credit: Ben Peter Catchpole UCL Engineering | UCL Pro-Provost London | UCL Innovation & Enterprise | UCL Research
