What kind of society are we building with robots and AI? 🤖 These technologies are rapidly moving from science fiction into everyday life – shaping how we learn, work, interact and make decisions. But who are they really benefiting? Could they help create fairer, more inclusive futures – or deepen existing inequalities? On 23 June, UCL Computer Science welcomes Dr Katie Winkle (Uppsala University) for the Peter Kirstein Lecture 2026, our flagship annual lecture series. In Designing Robots, Designing Society: Opportunity or Automating Inequality?, Katie will explore how robotics and AI could shape inequality, human behaviour and the future of society itself. Following the lecture, Katie will join Professor Yvonne Rogers FRS, a leading researcher in human-computer interaction and human-centred AI, and Dr Victoria Austin, PhD, Associate Professor in Social Justice and Innovation and Co-Founder of the Global Disability Innovation Hub, for a live fireside discussion and audience Q&A. Coinciding with International Women in Engineering Day (INWED), this year’s event features an all-female line-up exploring the social, ethical and human impact of robotics and AI. Where: UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health When: Tuesday 23 June 2026, 5pm Free registration available for both in-person and livestream attendance.
