Can CAR T-cell therapy offer hope to patients with severe lupus?Β π Early findings from the Phase I CARLYSLE study at UCLH suggest that obecabtagene autoleucel (obe-cel) may have potential beyond its initial application in blood cancer. The study is investigating whether obe-cel - which has FDA, EMA and MHRA approvals for use in certain types of leukaemia - can help βresetβ the immune system in people with severe, treatment-resistant systemic lupus erythematosus, a complex autoimmune disease with significant unmet need. Obe-cel was developed by Autolus Therapeutics based on science from the UCL Cancer Institute.Β Initial data presented at the EULAR - European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology conference, showed encouraging early safety and efficacy signals, including signs of clinical benefit in patients who had not responded to multiple previous treatments. This is another powerful example of how long-term academic discovery, supported through commercial translation, can open up new possibilities for patient impact.
