πŸ”¬πŸ©Ί Thinking about a career in Academic Surgery? Here's how it works! Starting from Medical School, there are two main pathways β€” clinical and academic β€” but the beauty is that you don't have to choose just one. The Clinical Pathway follows a straightforward progression: Medical School β†’ FY1-2 β†’ CST 1-2 β†’ ST3-8 β†’ Consultant The Academic Pathway runs alongside it, with dedicated Integrated Academic Training (IAT) at each stage, shown as a percentage of your time spent on academia: πŸŽ“ SFP (formerly AFP) (17% IAT) β€” Your first taste of academia during Foundation Years. But remember β€” this is just one entry point, not a prerequisite for anything that follows! πŸ”¬ ACF β€” Academic Clinical Fellowship (25% IAT) β€” Typically entered at CST level. Pre-doctoral time to develop a research project suitable for a PhD and to apply to an external funding body for a research training fellowship for the PhD. You don't need to have done an SFP to get here! πŸ“– PhD (100% IAT) β€” You step fully out of clinical training to complete your doctorate. Anyone can do a PhD at any point in their career β€” it's not exclusive to those on the formal academic pathway! πŸ›οΈ ACL β€” Academic Clinical Lectureship (50% IAT) β€” Re-entering after your PhD, you split your time between research and clinical work. You can apply after completing a PhD and after ST3. πŸ‘¨β€πŸ« Professor (75% IAT) β€” The pinnacle of academic surgery, with substantial protected research time. Note: there are lots of other senior academic positions available as well. πŸ’‘ The key takeaway? There is no single fixed route. You can enter, exit, and re-enter both the clinical and academic tracks at multiple points throughout your training. Before professorship, there are also many other opportunities including Clinician Scientist roles, Intermediate/Advanced Fellowships, Senior Clinical Fellowships, Associate Professor/Reader positions, and Senior Clinical Lecturer posts.
