Dr. Emma Feeney, Assistant Professor at University College Dublin and Associate Dean, Global Engagement at the UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science was yesterday awarded €1,308,752 for the project "SWEETWISE" - Sugar and sWeetener Evaluation for Emerging Technologies With Infant food Solutions for Exposure. Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Martin Heydon TD, and Minister of State with special responsibility for Research and Development Noel Grealish TD, announced funding of €37.5 million for 30 projects to support research across 19 institutes and this multidisciplinary project will bring together expertise from human nutrition, genetics, food science and technology and dentistry and feeding behaviour and will develop key strategies to address sugar reduction in Ireland. Lead by the team in UCD (Emma Feeney, Clare Reynolds, Tesfaye Bedane and James Lyng), the projects will partner with Trinity College Dublin (Michael Crowe and Gary Moran), and in Technological University Dublin (Liz O'Sullivan). The funding will support 4 PhD students and 1 postdoctoral researcher over the next 4 years on this exciting project. The SWEETWISE project will develop strategies to address sugar reduction, including; advancing our understanding of metabolic impacts of non-nutrtive sweeteners as well as testing advanced technolgies in non-thermal processing to determine their effect on free sugar content of childrens complementary weaning foods with a view to reformulation.
