We’re proud to celebrate Professor Alan Hemmings, who has been awarded the New Zealand Antarctic Medal in the King’s Birthday Honours, for services to Antarctic law and environmental protection. This honour recognises more than 40 years of internationally respected leadership in Antarctic scholarship, policy and conservation. Alan’s work has made a significant contribution to global understanding of Antarctic governance, geopolitics and environmental stewardship, and continues to shape important conversations about the future of the region❄️ At the University of Canterbury, Alan helped establish Gateway Antarctica in 1999, strengthening UC’s role in Antarctic research and education. His influence has also been felt through his teaching, supervision and mentorship of postgraduate students, and through his longstanding contribution to Antarctic policy and advocacy in New Zealand and internationally. We are delighted to see Alan’s outstanding contribution recognised in this way. Congratulations, Alan👏 #KingsBirthdayHonours #Antarctica #AntarcticResearch
