This is your brain on psychedelics. UC Berkeley professor Michael Silver uses imaging to understand the effects of psychedelics on the brain. As Faculty Director of the UC Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics, Silver is advancing psychedelic discovery for the public good, uncovering the neural mechanisms of these powerful substances. This research not only has the potential to help us better understand the human mind and consciousness, but also to transform the treatment of certain mental illnesses. Silver’s lab recently began enrolling participants in PLASTICITY, a new study investigating how psilocybin may affect memory, perception, emotion, and brain structure and function in healthy older adults. The researchers are seeking to understand whether a psychedelic experience could counteract the neural process of aging --offering a new avenue to promote healthy aging.
