UC Berkeley has been named the top public university in the U.S., and No. 7 globally in U.S. News & World Report’s 2026 Best Global Universities rankings. The rankings also assess a university’s strength in various subject areas. This year, Berkeley was named in the top five globally in a number of subjects, including physics (No. 3), biology and biochemistry (No. 4), economics and business (No. 4), environment/ecology (No. 4), and space science (No. 5). The best global university list is distinct from the U.S. News & World Report ranking of the best American colleges and universities, which is calculated using different metrics and released each September.
