👽 Alien or no alien, this is one of the most exciting timing applications we've had the opportunity to support. Researchers in the PANOSETI (Pulsed All-sky Near-infrared Optical SETI) project, including researchers at University of California, Berkeley and other leading institutions, are using u-blox ZED-F9T high-precision GNSS timing technology to synchronize distributed telescope arrays searching for fast optical and near-infrared signals that could indicate extraterrestrial intelligence. The project demonstrated sub-nanosecond synchronization performance without relying on fiber infrastructure, highlighting how GNSS timing can support advanced scientific instrumentation in remote locations. While the science is fascinating, the engineering challenge is equally impressive: correlating observations across geographically separated telescope nodes with extreme timing precision.
