The ~300 Mt biomass ceiling is built on conventional feedstocks. Used cooking oil, the cheapest, most established SAF input, is essentially maxed out globally. Waste oils and residues are finite and contested. Purpose-grown oil crops carry land-use penalties that disqualify many of them under EU rules. The conventional feedstock pool is close to tapped, and that is precisely why IATA notes the biomass ceiling “could be expanded by unlocking additional feedstocks.”
