Western Electric Company | Hawthorne Works Additions – c. 1928 Completed in 1928, Turner delivered a series of additions to the Western Electric Company’s Hawthorne Works in Chicago, Illinois, located south of 22nd Street and west of South Kenneth Street. The project included eight one-story reinforced concrete buildings with brick exteriors, along with a train shed and upgrades to the site’s rail infrastructure. At its peak, Hawthorne Works employed more than 40,000 people and stood as one of the largest manufacturing facilities in the United States, playing a central role in the production of telephone equipment during a period of rapid growth in communications technology. #BuiltbyTurner #TurnerChicago #ConstructionHistory #WesternElectric #HawthorneWorks #IndustrialConstruction #HistoricBuildings
