🏚️ Temporary housing designed for one year often remains in use for ten to fifteen years. After the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake, TU Delft architecture students Leyla van der Waarde and Meriç Kessaf set out to change that. They founded the Architectural Recovery Team (ART) and developed a modular core unit with essential facilities, designed to be deployed within a month and become the foundation of a permanent home. One insight from the field changed the design entirely: privacy and hygiene, especially for women and children, proved just as important as speed. The first family has now moved in.
