How can we tackle grid congestion while accelerating the energy transition? ⚡ As electricity grids become increasingly congested, flexibility is key. The ROBUST research project demonstrates how smart energy systems can reduce pressure on the grid while creating room for new housing and the transition to renewable energy. A central finding? Electric vehicles (EVs) can be part of the solution. Through smart and bidirectional charging, EVs can act as flexible energy storage, feeding electricity back to the grid when demand is high. Together with innovations such as second-life batteries, these technologies help balance the electricity system and make better use of existing grid capacity. At TU Delft, researchers from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science collaborated with Utrecht University to develop energy models and charging demand forecasts based on real charging behaviour. These insights help optimize the integration of electric vehicles into the electricity grid and support the development of a more flexible, future-proof energy system. The impact of ROBUST is already visible in practice.
