We’ve normalized the idea that the solution to lost keys is: 👉 “Just involve more people.” Your spouse. Your friends. A set of “guardians.” Or split it across vendors with MPC. Let’s call it what it is: You are replacing cryptographic security with human coordination. And humans are the weakest link in any system. Social recovery assumes: • people stay reachable • relationships don’t change • instructions are followed perfectly • no one is ever compromised, coerced, or careless None of those assumptions hold over time. MPC doesn’t fix this. It just formalizes it. Now, instead of trusting one key, you’re trusting: • multiple devices • multiple parties • and often… a vendor in the middle That’s not self-custody. That’s outsourced fragility. And the failure modes aren’t theoretical: • guardians disappear • families dispute access • approvals get socially engineered • vendors become critical dependencies What’s marketed as “recovery” becomes: a coordination problem with financial consequences. The uncomfortable truth: If your security model depends on multiple humans doing the right thing over long periods of time… it’s not secure. Self-custody should remove trust. Not redistribute it. Where does this break first in your view? #SelfCustody #DigitalAssets #CryptoSecurity #MPC #BlockchainInfrastructure
