Is Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on a sentimental journey to Ireland or is there more at stake? Raj Chari Professor in Political Science at Trinity College Dublin, Director of Trinity Research in Social Sciences, and a Canadian who has lived in Ireland for 25 years, outlined his thoughts on the matter in an opinion piece published today's Irish Independent. "He is visiting Ireland on his way to the G7 in Évian, courting precisely the kind of country he described in Davos earlier this year — the middle power that has decided it is not powerless," Chari wrote. "Middle powers must act together because, as the saying goes, if you are not at the table, you are on the menu. "This is the deeper logic of Carney's visit: it is, above all, about closer collaboration between Ireland and Canada. With Washington an unreliable partner, Canada has every reason to bind itself more tightly to Europe — and Ireland, the EU member most fluent in the transatlantic economy, is its natural partner and bridge."
