When smartphones started shipping with free GPS, Garmin and TomTom faced the same vanishing market for standalone navigation devices. Garmin moved early into fitness wearables, outdoor, marine, and aviation. TomTom's stock still hasn't recovered. Same disruption, same window to act. What differed was which company was scanning closely enough to move before the market forced its hand.
