SMMEs are not small in economic terms. South Africa has an estimated 3 million SMMEs* that employ more than half of our workforce. ** However, 72% of these businesses operate informally,** and among those that are formalised, only around 5% are able to access bank credit.* That gap matters. It highlights the challenge isn’t just whether businesses exist, trade or create value. The real issue is whether that activity translates into the signals and confidence lenders need to fund them. Too many businesses remain economically active yet financially invisible.
