Our research analyst Akira Kanno reviewed Nippon Steel’s 2025 Sustainability Report. The company appears more proactive on decarbonisation—presenting electric arc furnaces (EAFs) as its main short-term pathway and announcing EAF expansion plans in Japan. However, our analysis shows that between 2013–2024, 89% of emission reductions came from lower production, not genuine improvements in emission intensity—pointing to limited progress in decarbonising steelmaking.
