With the  flood of new AI models and functionality in the last 6 months, this conversation is suddenly much more relevant than when I first recorded it. Dr. Santosh Helekar is a neuroscientist and inventor of a device designed to measure consciousness itself. The Sentiometer uses laser diffraction to detect what he believes is a physical signature of consciousness and what lit me up most about his presentation in Barcelona last year was how enthusiastically he’s been trying to prove himself wrong! But beyond his experiments on people, animals, insects and plants - both living and not - his years of work on this project have generated a firm opinion on whether or not machines have what it takes to embody consciousness.
