On the way to carbon-neutral Europe, how can we decarbonise road transport and still preserve a competitive and resilient automotive industry? At the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) Roadhouse panel “Renewable fuels: Driving the road for decarbonisation?”, Andrea Enrico Saccone, Senior Manager for European & Governmental Affairs at Toyota Motor Europe reinforced a practical point: decarbonising mobility needs a combination of solutions, deployed at scale to deliver real CO₂ reductions, be it through BEVs, PHEVs, vehicles running on renewable fuels or hydrogen. Our long-held belief is that a multi‑pathway approach is the most practical way to reduce CO₂ as much as possible, as soon as possible, while keeping mobility accessible and affordable across diverse European markets. But ambition alone is not enough to scale all solutions effectively. To unlock the contribution of renewable fuels, policy needs to provide clarity and confidence by: → recognising RED‑compliant renewable fuels, → creating a new vehicle category using only renewable fuels, recognised as zero‑emission under CO₂ regulation to enable deployment → ensuring sufficient fuel availability through the revision of the Renewable Energy Directive The focus should stay on outcomes: faster CO₂ reduction, practical deployment, and a transition that works across Europe. And for Toyota, it’s clear: carbon is the enemy, not any single technology.
