On this day in 1893, the original Valdese Settlers arrived in Valdese. The report of that memorable date states: "On the night of their arrival, on May 29, the families gathered around a table and hear the reading of Ps. 103, followed by a meditation suited to the occasion; this first service of thanksgiving and gratitude and ended with a hymn and a prayer." Within a few days, the contract for the purchase of land was completed, and with a charter granted by the State of NC, the Valdese Corporation was founded. The original settlers include: -J. Henri Tron, 29. -Jean Refour, 42, with son, Jean, 15. -Jean Guigou, 41, and wife Catherine, 31, with 4 children: Louis Phillipe , 10; Etienne, 7; Alexis, 5; and Naomi, 3. -Pierre Tron, 39 and wife Louise, 34. with two children: Albert, 5; and Madeleine, 3. -Albert Pons, 35. - Jean Giraud, 34. -Philippe Richard, 33. and wife, Marianna Louise, 38. with two children: Philippe, 9; and Etienne, 4. -Jean Henri Pons, 29. -Francois Pons, 24. -Francois Tron, 18. and wife, Marguerite, 31. -Jaubert Micol, 40; and wife Jeanne, 38; with 4 Children: Jean, 15; Marguerite, 12; Emmanuel, 7; and Victor, 2. -Rev.
