Tourism to #Antarctica is rapidly rising as travelers seek to witness the continent’s disappearing frozen landscapes before climate change reshapes them forever. More than 80,000 tourists landed in Antarctica in 2024, while another 36,000 viewed the continent from cruise ships, according to industry data. Scientists warn the number of annual visits could exceed 400,000 within the next decade. Environmental experts are raising concerns over increasing risks linked to contamination, disease outbreaks, and ecosystem disruption in one of the world’s most fragile environments. Recent concerns intensified following a #hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius during a polar expedition. With Antarctica losing an estimated 149 billion metric tons of ice annually between 2002 and 2020, “last chance tourism” is becoming a growing trend, prompting renewed calls for stronger environmental protections under the Antarctic Treaty framework. #Antarctica #SustainableTourism #ClimateChange #TravelNews #ExpeditionCruise #TourismInsights #Ecotourism
