What Aussie animal can move three tonnes of earth in a year? Meet the Bilby - an "ecosystem engineer" and a key beneficiary of the conservation efforts led by Taronga Conservation Society Australia. Behind Taronga Western Plains Zoo, a 110-hectare sanctuary is helping to rebuild Greater Bilby populations and reintroduce them into predator-proof habitats. And their impact is outsized: each bilby can turn over around three tonnes of soil every year, helping rain penetrate the ground and native plants regenerate. It’s a simple but powerful reminder that our native biodiversity underpins the health of our iconic landscapes.
