Reducing reliance on SF₆ is one of the power industry’s biggest challenges. Toshiba is taking a step forward. Toshiba has confirmed the fundamental performance of a 300 kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) and gas circuit breaker (GCB) that eliminates SF₆ and instead uses natural-origin gases. Using a CO₂ and O₂ gas mixture, full-scale testing verified safe and reliable interruption and insulation performance, marking an important step toward practical deployment. This work supports Toshiba’s AEROXIA™ portfolio, a new line of transmission and distribution equipment designed to utilize natural-origin gases with low global warming potential. With commercialization targeted for fiscal year 2028, Toshiba continues to advance technologies that support the evolution of power infrastructure.
