Air Canada has officially named Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) chief executive Anko Van der Werff as its next President and CEO, bringing an end to months of intense industry speculation. The high-profile international recruitment concludes a sweeping global search to replace outgoing chief Michael Rousseau, who announced his retirement this past March following a 19-year tenure with the country's flagship carrier. Rousseau's exit followed intense public scrutiny and a highly publicized language controversy earlier this year when he failed to offer mandatory bilingual condolences in French following a tragic crash that killed two Canadian pilots. Van der Werff, a veteran aviation executive with a 25-year track record leading global carriers like Avianca, Aeroméxico, and KLM, will officially relocate to Montreal and assume the top job by the end of January 2027. The move is being viewed as a massive shakeup for Air Canada as it navigates structural transformations, aggressive fleet expansions, and mounting cross-border competition. Meanwhile, Copenhagen-based SAS, which is part-owned by Air France-KLM, confirmed they are immediately launching an executive search to fill the vacancy left by Van der Werff’s upcoming departure to Canada. #AirCanada #AnkoVanDerWerff #AviationNews #CorporateLeadership #TorontoCulture
