Renewable energy has overtaken coal as the world's leading electricity source for the first time – and India is at the forefront of this transformation. India now has the third largest solar capacity and fourth largest wind capacity globally. The country met its Paris Agreement 2030 targets five years early, with non-fossil fuel sources now comprising half of its electricity capacity. But there's still much to do. India has set an ambitious target of 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030, and achieving this will require international collaboration. This is where Scotland's expertise comes in. Our world-leading capabilities in offshore wind, tidal energy and hydrogen align perfectly with India's renewable energy priorities. The UK-India Free Trade Agreement, signed in July 2025, includes a substantial green energy component that's expected to accelerate trade in clean technologies and create opportunities for businesses on both sides. India's offshore wind target of 37 GW by 2030 (with technical potential exceeding 70 GW) presents particular opportunities for Scottish firms with experience in financing, project development, construction and operation of offshore wind projects. Dentons, through their presence in Scotland and partnership with Dentons Link Legal in India, are supporting businesses and stakeholders to navigate the regulatory, financing and legal complexities of cross-border green energy projects. In today's Scotsman, Kirsty McBirnie and Linzi Hedalen from Dentons explore this opportunity in more detail.
