#autoenergy Mondays at Coherent Corp. #Fusion #Energy: From Science Fiction to Reality – And Why Photonics Holds the Key For decades, fusion energy has been the ultimate clean energy dream—virtually limitless power, zero carbon emissions, and no long-lived radioactive waste. Today, that dream is moving closer to reality, and photonics is at the heart of this transformation. That’s why I’m thrilled to share that Coherent has joined Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s #STARFIRE Diode Technology Working Group. This collaboration is focused on advancing Inertial Fusion Energy (IFE)—a breakthrough approach that uses powerful lasers to replicate the same fusion process that powers the sun. Why Inertial Fusion Energy Matters IFE works by directing intense laser pulses onto a tiny fuel pellet, compressing and heating it until hydrogen isotopes fuse into helium, releasing enormous amounts of energy. Unlike traditional nuclear power, fusion offers: 🔸 Abundant fuel from isotopes like deuterium and tritium 🔸 No greenhouse gas emissions 🔸 Minimal radioactive waste The Role of ⚡Laser Diodes High-power laser diodes are the most efficient way to pump the massive solid-state lasers required for IFE. They deliver: 🔹 High electrical-to-optical efficiency 🔹 Scalability for large systems 🔹 Reliability for continuous operation Why Coherent Is the Right Partner Coherent brings decades of leadership in: ➕ High-power diode laser technology ➕ Advanced photonics integration ➕ Scalable manufacturing for mission-critical applications As we highlighted in our recent blog on photonics for laser fusion, these capabilities make us a key enabler for STARFIRE’s mission: turning fusion energy into a practical, economically viable solution for global clean energy needs.
