For more than five years, Coherent has been working closely with the e-mobility industry to address these challenges. Our commitment to innovation is reflected in a series of patents that demonstrate how we’re helping to push the industry forward: 🔸 Laser welding stacked foils (2020, US11446764B2) 🔸 Laser welding metal foil stack to metal substrate (2022, WO2022179760A1) 🔸 Single-step laser cutting and pre-welding of a metal foil stack (2025, US20250091161A1) We’re delighted to announce the most recent patent, filed by my colleagues Majid Abbasi and Farzad Vakili Farahani, which introduces a fully laser-based method for joining foil stacks to tabs in lithium-ion battery cells: Combines laser cutting and pre-welding in a single step, reducing the process to just two steps instead of three or more 🔷 Delivers precise ⚡power ⚡control, minimising heat accumulation and improving weld integrity 🔷 Vaporises contaminants during welding, unlike ultrasonic methods 🔷 Supports high-capacity cells with 120+ foils, ensuring strong, reliable joints with minimal spatter Together, these innovations show that Coherent is not just following trends—we’re actively shaping the future of EV battery manufacturing with solutions that improve quality, reduce costs, and enable scalability.
