𝙎𝙏𝙄𝙋-𝘾 | 𝘿𝙖𝙮 𝟭 | 𝙋𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙂𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙣 𝙀𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝙇𝙞𝙛𝙚 Sometimes, the policies that affect our everyday lives are the ones we notice only when we experience them differently, and my observation today came from comparing two cities I’ve lived in. Today, I noticed one such policy while thinking about 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 – the new Government’s provision of 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗹. The idea behind such initiatives is to make public transport more accessible and encourage greater mobility. The policy is experienced in 𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 — while commuting to work, attending classes, or managing daily responsibilities. Its value depends on 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 of a 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 for people. While travelling, I realised that 𝗯𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀 are important factors in shaping the accessibility and reliability of public transport. This also reminded me of my experience in Delhi where government buses were a regular part of my daily commute because of their wider and frequent availability. The contrast made me look at public transport not just as a mode of travel, but as something shaped by 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. The impact of a 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 depends on how effectively it translates into 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀. This challenge reminded me to look at the policies around me — not only as government decisions, but as 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀. This was my observation for Day 1 of the challenge.
